Receeding Gums

The most common cause of receding gums is trauma (Fig. 1). Trauma can occur by way of an improper tooth brushing technique, the use of a hard-bristle toothbrush, an improper flossing technique (Fig. 2), and habits such as grinding and clenching. When bacterial plaque accumulates on a tooth, the resulting inflammation may also cause recession (Fig. 3). Recession may also be caused by periodontitis (Fig. 4).
