Make Oral Health Care Your 2024 Focus!
Living Healthy means means keeping our oral health in tip-top shape!
Part of our 2024 goals should include a healthy diet, regular exercise and a good oral health care regimen. Maintaining healthy teeth and gums is important to help us eat speak and smile. Chronic infections in and around our gums and teeth can go unnoticed until serious problems arise.
As dental health care providers, we often are told, "I didn't realize I had a cavity....but I have no pain?" Similarly, patients are oftentimes unaware that they have deep pockets in the gums around their teeth. These infections harbour bacteria which increase the risk of periodontal disease and if left untreated will affect our overall health.
Taking the following steps can ensure you stay healthy:
·Brush and floss teeth twice daily
·Visit your dentist as has been recommended by your dentist and hygienist. A dental check up at least once a year is important even if you have only a few or natural teeth or have dentures.
·Avoid tobacco products and limit alcoholic drinks.
·Patients with diabetes must work on maintaining control of the disease. This will improve their overall health and decrease their risk of gum diease. If you have diabetes, work to maintain control of the disease.
·Some medications cause dry mouth which could cause cavities. Talk to your doctor for alternative medication if possible. Manage your dry mouth by drinking plenty of water and chewing sugarless gum.
·If you notice a change in taste or smell, see your doctor or dentist for evaluation.
·Caregivers should assist the elderly with their oral health care, especially when performing these activities becomes difficult.

Is Vaping bad for my oral health?
Smoking e-cigarettes may not be the healthier alternative to cigarettes or chewing tobacco.
·In the Journal of the American Dental Association, a 2022 study found people who vape had more cavities then those who did not. Scientists have evaluated the flavored vapes from e- cigarettes and have found that they have similar properties to candy gummies or sugary soft drinks.

Thinking about improving your smile?
Veneers and crowns can improve the appearance of your teeth, and each treatment option has its own set of pros and cons.
·Deciding on a veneer or crown will depend on the condition of your teeth. Discoloured teeth, cracked, chipped or decayed can all be reasons to choose one of these restorations. Although braces are always considered first, even crooked teeth can be cosmetically corrected with these restorations. We work with highly experienced dental labs to create aesthetically natural crowns and veneers. We encourage you to discuss these options with one of us at your next dental visit.
